Gather ‘round and listen close, all you stray & wayfarin’ souls: here we’ve got Johnnie Ninety-Nine and her string-pickin’ neo-pioneers, The Good Time Family Band, with some Hymns for your wanderings! Recorded live-off-the-floor in Nashville’s fine Welcome to 1979 Studios during the autumn of aught ‘10, amidst a tour around a scattered 19 provinces and states in our fabled North Americas, Johnnie’s taken the sights, sounds and smells of the New West and made ‘em old again.
That crunch of gravel ‘neath your tires as you wind down that dusty country road while your engine chugs along at a steady rhythm? That’s Jake Stead on upright bass, taking you for a stroll into the old farmyard you stumbled upon. The wind whistling’ through the trees around the abandoned home-quarter, that’s the Family Band’s special guest American Jeff “Rollie” Rolfzen hummin’ a tune for you on harmonica. James Green’s guitar & L’il Red’s fiddle are playing the creaks of the floorboards and singing of the hinges as you open all the doors and let the light in. If you stand still, you’ll hear the dust settling on old whiskey bottles, some banjo-pickin’ echoing off the front porch and a-hootin’ and a-hollerin’ emanating from the old barn. That’s Johnnie Ninety-Nine. That’s True Grit! Cigarettes! and Gasoline! (courtesy D. Nichol)
